Two wallets linked to the Ethereum Foundation transferred 4,393 ETH worth approximately $11.13 million to the Kraken exchange on October 12, 2026. Blockchain analyst EmberCN reported the transaction on X, though there has been no official confirmation from either the foundation or Kraken. At the time of the transfer, ETH was trading between $2,555 and $2,563, moving below its 9-day simple moving average (SMA) of $2,585.
ETH’s 14-day Relative Strength Index (RSI) stood at 47.59. Sitting below the neutral 50 threshold, this figure reflects weak momentum, though it has not yet reached oversold territory. However, market attention is focused not just on the $11 million figure, but on the history of the wallets moving it.
A Decade-Old Allocation Trail
According to EmberCN’s analysis, both sender addresses are linked to an Ethereum Foundation wallet that distributed 59,751 ETH roughly 10 years ago. Since that initial allocation was disbursed, 49,751 ETH, or 83% of the total holdings, has been moved to Kraken. The historical average price for all transfers to the exchange stands at around $658 per coin, leaving a remaining balance of approximately 10,000 ETH, or 17% of the original allocation.
The Ethereum Foundation’s treasury management is anchored in a formal cash policy published in June 2025. Those guidelines target annual operating expenses of 15% of total treasury assets, alongside a reserve buffer covering 2.5 years of expenses. In addition, the foundation launched a staking program of approximately 70,000 ETH in February 2026, with staking yields channeled back into its internal treasury.
Selling Patterns Distinct from Exchange Routes
Prior to this Kraken transfer, the foundation had relied on planned strategies to liquidate holdings. In April 2026, the foundation announced plans to sell 5,000 ETH via CoWSwap using a time-weighted average price (TWAP) strategy. In May 2026, it sold 10,000 ETH to BitMine through an over-the-counter (OTC) transaction at an average price of $2,292 per token, bringing the documented total offloaded via OTC channels to 25,000 ETH.
Not Necessarily a Market Sell-Off
Deposits to centralized exchanges are often interpreted as preparation for liquidation, but this transfer does not confirm an immediate sale. Funds sent to Kraken could be held in exchange accounts for liquidity purposes or swapped for other assets without being sold on the open market. To date, neither the Ethereum Foundation nor Kraken has provided official confirmation regarding the purpose of the transfer.
For market participants and ETH holders, distinguishing between exchange deposits and actual market selling is key to avoiding hasty interpretations of liquidity trends. As long as the foundation has not announced a token sale, concluding that this transaction represents direct selling pressure remains premature.
