Unstoppable Domains has officially decided against submitting applications to the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) for nine of its Web3 extensions, including .crypto, .wallet, and .blockchain, before the 2026 round deadline closed on August 12.
Founder Matthew Gould announced the decision, citing unfavorable financials. The company concluded that compliance costs, application preparation expenses, and potential ICANN auctions far exceeded projected domain sales revenue. As compensation, Unstoppable has begun reaching out to affected customers via email to offer refund options. However, specific details regarding eligible extensions, refund amounts, and claims procedures have not yet been disclosed.
Two Separate Systems
The retreat ends Unstoppable Domains’ long-standing ambition since 2019 to bridge Web3 names with the conventional internet. Without ICANN approval, blockchain domains and the standard DNS naming system will continue to operate as two separate entities. Web3 extensions will remain on-chain assets serving as crypto address aliases in compatible wallets and apps, but will not resolve natively in standard browsers. Similar uncertainty now hangs over the Polygon-based .brave domain launched in partnership with the Brave browser in May 2025.
Its primary competitor, Ethereum Name Service (ENS), is taking the opposite route. As ICANN received over 1,600 primary applications in the final days of the 2026 round, ENS token holders recently approved a foundation restructuring, appointing five dedicated council members to represent ENS interests directly at ICANN.
Shifting to a Registry Provider
Despite dropping its own extensions, Unstoppable is maintaining its footprint in the internet naming ecosystem by pivoting to become a technical service provider for partner applications. The company is now serving as a registry provider for Telegram, which is applying for the .gram extension with ICANN. Telegram founder Pavel Durov noted that more than 1 billion users could potentially utilize .gram addresses in the future.
For retail buyers holding .crypto or .wallet extensions, the on-chain utility of their assets remains unaffected. However, the long-standing promise that these names could one day be typed directly into Chrome or Safari address bars has officially fallen through. Domain owners must now settle for their original function as crypto transfer addresses while awaiting refund instructions in their email.
