6 Million Bitcoin Vulnerable to Quantum Attacks - 9 Crypto Firms Form Joint Standard

Approximately 6.04 million BTC - equivalent to 30% of Bitcoin’s total supply - are currently vulnerable to quantum computer attacks because their public keys are exposed on the open ledger. In response to the threat, nine crypto firms officially launched the Quantum Alliance on Thursday, October 17, 2026. This open standards body is tasked with establishing official criteria for ‘quantum-resistant’ claims while drafting compatibility guidelines for the industry’s cryptographic migration.

The alliance’s founding group includes Quantus, Postquant Labs, Midnight Foundation, Keystone, Abelian, and security firm Hacken. The founders took action because the crypto industry still lacks an agreed-upon definition of ‘quantum-ready’ as well as a standardized way to test it. This absence of benchmarks has allowed quantum protection claims to be made without any clear foundation.

Why 6 Million Coins Are Vulnerable

The vulnerability of 6.04 million BTC stems from transaction trails on the blockchain, where owners’ public keys were exposed on the ledger. Recent forecast clusters point to the late 2020s as the threat window, but a model developed by two alliance contributors estimates March 2028 as an early arrival timeline. That calculation aligns with a Google Quantum AI study estimating that a quantum computer with fewer than 500,000 qubits would be sufficient to break Bitcoin’s cryptography.

The Quantum Alliance joins a growing wave of industry response. Coinbase recently urged Bitcoin developers to begin cryptographic migration immediately, while a consortium backed by BlackRock, Strategy, and Coinbase has committed $15 million to fund research into the issue.

Broader Than Just Bitcoin

The Quantum Alliance is modeled after the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF). In this forum, technical proposals advance solely on the basis of public evidence and real-world implementation, rather than being determined by a company’s capital size or token holdings. The alliance has divided its focus into four working groups: blockchain migration, post-quantum zero-knowledge systems, wallet security, and cross-chain compatibility.

In practice, quantum threats do not stop at Bitcoin. The same elliptic-curve encryption currently secures stablecoin minting keys, cross-chain bridges, data oracles, and governance contracts. A single compromised key could trigger a domino effect across entire platforms.

Quantus CEO Christopher Smith summarized the urgency of this standard shift: “In the future, post-quantum cryptography will just be called cryptography, and the rest will be in a museum.” For crypto asset holders, this warning carries real-world consequences: once a public key has been recorded on the public ledger, the clock is ticking to upgrade wallet protections.
