US Government Pours $2 Billion into Crypto-Breaking Computers - Galaxy Digital Prepares $5M Bitcoin Shield

The threat is no longer just theoretical. As the United States government allocates billions of dollars to develop quantum computers, 6.9 million Bitcoin worth approximately $461 billion at a price of $66,800 have entered the crosshairs of potential breaches. Facing this looming risk, Galaxy Digital (GLXY) is taking an initial step by establishing the Galaxy Bitcoin Quantum Readiness Initiative, a $5 million grant fund dedicated to developers working to protect the network from future computing attacks.

The grant fund, with applications opening soon, focuses on three essential areas: quantum-resistant signature schemes, wallet migration tools, and security audits. This protective measure is being taken not because the network will be hacked tomorrow; current quantum computing technology is widely acknowledged to be too immature to break blockchains immediately. However, overhauling the cryptographic foundations of a decentralized network takes years to design, test, and achieve consensus across its community.

More Complex than the Taproot Upgrade

Migrating the network into the post-quantum era is projected to be far more complex than previous protocol updates. While technical upgrades like Taproot required extensive coordination, transitioning to a new cryptographic system demands an even tighter level of execution. Bitcoin core developers, wallet providers, exchange operators, and end users must all move in sync without disrupting active network consensus.

Galaxy Digital recognizes that the $5 million fund is merely initial capital. They hope the initiative encourages other major crypto industry players to contribute funds and research resources to accelerate the security transition. According to analysis from CryptoQuant, the stakes are too high to ignore, with millions of BTC at risk of being stolen if these machines eventually succeed in cracking the security mechanisms of Bitcoin’s ledger.

Two Sides of Washington’s Policy

The urgency to build a security shield aligns with maneuvers at the federal level. President Trump recently signed two executive orders running in tandem: one to accelerate the development of large-scale quantum computer systems, and another to defend federal infrastructure from quantum threats.

At the same time, the United States Department of Commerce formalized letters of intent to disburse over $2 billion to nine quantum computing technology companies. The machines being built by these government funding recipients are designed with capabilities that could breach the cryptographic walls shielding Bitcoin and Ethereum networks. The race between network shield builders and code-cracking machine creators is now officially underway.
