ZEC price has surged past the $500 mark amid market optimism surrounding the upcoming Ironwood hard fork. However, the network upgrade scheduled for July 28, 2026, at block 3,428,143 originated from an emergency security finding.
The upgrade comes in response to a critical bug discovered on May 29, 2026, by security researcher Taylor Hornby in the Orchard shielded pool.
The flaw created a vulnerability that could allow an attacker to mint counterfeit ZEC within the Orchard ecosystem without leaving a public trace. Due to Orchard’s strict privacy features, the Zcash team had no way to verify independently whether the exploit had been used. On July 19, Zcash founder Zooko Wilcox stated on X that the team believes the vulnerability was never exploited, with no evidence of counterfeit value being generated. Developers had previously patched the cryptographic layer via the NU6.2 hard fork.
The Turnstile Solution
Rather than speculating on the potential impact, developers opted for complete isolation. The Ironwood hard fork, also designated as NU6.3, will permanently shut down and deprecate the legacy Orchard pool while introducing a new shielded pool built on a repaired circuit.
Once activated, users will no longer be able to send or receive ZEC within the legacy Orchard pool. Remaining funds can only exit through a turnstile system. This mechanism ensures that ZEC withdrawals cannot exceed the total amount of legitimate coins previously deposited. As a result, if any counterfeit ZEC had been minted, it would remain trapped inside the old pool with no way to enter wider circulation.
Zcash holders do not need to take immediate action ahead of the hard fork. Nevertheless, crypto exchanges and wallet providers are expected to temporarily suspend deposits and withdrawals during the upgrade process.
Machine and Human Auditors
Zcash’s efforts to secure its network extend beyond the block upgrade. The development team conducted an AI-assisted security review powered by Anthropic Mythos to thoroughly re-examine the system following Hornby’s discovery.
The automated scan revealed no additional severe vulnerabilities beyond the initial bug. Alongside automated reviews, developers are currently pursuing independent audit results and formal verification specifically for their new cryptographic framework.
For ZEC holders, the price rally toward $500 amid these remediation efforts indicates that the market favors decisive mitigation over temporary patchwork. When developers choose to freeze a flagship privacy pool to contain a vulnerability, investors recognize that their assets are being safeguarded with concrete action.
