Deutsche Bank is preparing a digital asset custody service scheduled to launch in Germany within weeks. The European global systemically important bank (G-SIB) has set its next expansion target: bringing the custody facility to Asia in 2027. At the initial launch stage, the facility will support bitcoin, ether, and three stablecoins: USDC, EURC, and EURAU.
This model is designed to meet the needs of corporate clients looking to access digital asset markets through an established financial institution. However, the German launch is only the beginning of a broader expansion plan.
Why Private Keys Are Left to the Bank
All wallet and private key management will remain under Deutsche Bank’s control. This scheme is designed for institutional and corporate investors who want crypto exposure without having to shoulder the technical risks of self-custody wallets. Corporate clients can hold digital assets under banking security standards without needing to store private keys themselves.
The custody facility is not the only product in the pipeline. Deutsche Bank also plans to offer stablecoin-to-stablecoin conversions and tokenized deposits. In addition, the bank will assist clients with issuing digital bonds and blockchain-based securities. For this custody technology infrastructure, Deutsche Bank is partnering with the Bitpanda platform and technology provider Taurus.
BaFin Authorization Under MiCA Rules
Legal certainty was established after BaFin, the German financial regulator, granted authorization on October 12 under the European Union’s Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) framework, as listed on the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) interim register. This move positions Deutsche Bank as a European global systemically important bank (G-SIB) actively building institutional crypto infrastructure under MiCA.
Financial targets within the corporate bank division are also a driving factor: Deutsche Bank is targeting roughly an 8% annual revenue increase in its corporate banking unit from 2025 to 2028.
Chasing Global Rivals Toward Asia
In international markets, Deutsche Bank is not the sole pioneer among major financial institutions. Competitors like Standard Chartered and BBVA rolled out crypto asset custody facilities earlier for their clients. Deutsche Bank’s entry intensifies competition in delivering digital asset infrastructure among top global banks.
The plan to bring custody services to Asia in 2027 marks a next step in expanding its institutional client reach beyond Europe. Even so, the bank has yet to disclose its first target jurisdiction in the Asian region.
The presence of a regulated G-SIB highlights a new direction for crypto adoption: major institutions can enter digital assets without designing security systems from scratch. For corporate finance managers, this facility provides a more familiar pathway through a bank they already use every day.
