The tokenized stock market is 1.5 times more volatile than conventional equity exchanges, according to Chapter 3 of the IMF’s Global Financial Stability Report released on October 8, 2026, titled “Scaling Tokenization: New Efficiencies, New Vulnerabilities.” The report builds on earlier findings by providing detailed cross-platform data.
The IMF study examined five of the most actively traded US equity products in tokenized form: Tesla, Nvidia, Alphabet, the S&P 500, and the Nasdaq. Drawing on data from Ondo Finance and xStocks across 11 trading venues, the IMF analyzed a sample valued at roughly $345 million - accounting for 15% of the total tokenized equities market. Across 365 trading days, researchers gathered more than 2 million price and volume observations at five-minute intervals.
Behind that volatility, however, two distinct trading patterns highlight shifting investor appetite. More than 50% of tokenized stock trades take place outside regular US exchange hours (9:30 AM to 4:00 PM local time). Furthermore, around 80% of transactions involve fractional shares of less than a single full unit. These findings point to clear demand for 24-hour continuous trading and fractional ownership access among retail investors.
Why DEX Liquidity Is Most Vulnerable
The choice of venue directly influences price stability. The IMF noted that decentralized exchanges (DEXs) are the most volatile venue, followed by centralized crypto exchanges (CEXs), while traditional stock markets remain the most stable. The primary culprit is liquidity: tokenized shares remain far less liquid than conventional bourses. As a result, prices swing more violently due to a limited pool of buyers and sellers in onchain markets.
This thin liquidity becomes particularly dangerous when combined with crypto market automation. The IMF cautioned that automated margin calls, cross-platform collateral arrangements, and 24-hour trading can make it difficult to absorb shocks during sudden sell-offs. While the systemic scale of risk remains limited due to the market’s small overall footprint, the IMF urged the development of clear property rights frameworks, liquidity backstops, and sound settlement mechanisms before the sector expands further.
Price Transmission Within Five Minutes
Despite their wider swings, tokenized stocks are not operating as an isolated speculative market. The IMF research demonstrated clear information transmission from tokenized assets to conventional stock exchanges. In fact, traditional markets absorb more than 85% of overnight tokenized stock price moves within just five minutes of Wall Street’s opening bell. Off-hours onchain price action has effectively become an early leading indicator picked up by mainstream markets.
The next frontier is shifting toward capital efficiency. Bitget CEO Gracy Chen cautioned that tokenizing physical assets is merely at an early stage. “Moving assets onchain is only step one - the big question is how efficiently capital can work once it gets there,” Chen said.
For retail investors, the ability to purchase fractions of global tech giants in the middle of the night calls for added caution. Wider bid-ask spreads and the threat of rapid liquidation in illiquid pools remain immediate risks that must be weighed. Round-the-clock access delivers scheduling freedom, but its protective shock absorbers are not yet as sturdy as those of conventional exchanges.
