Saylor Teases New Bitcoin Purchase - Despite Preferred Stock Buybacks Outpacing Crypto Budget Sixfold

Michael Saylor posted the message ‘There’s always room for more orange’ on his X account on Sunday. The post was promptly interpreted by the market as a signal of a new Bitcoin purchase by Strategy, continuing the founder’s habit of dropping visual hints ahead of official filings.

Official confirmation via an SEC filing is likely to emerge on Tuesday. The disclosure was delayed because U.S. federal agency offices were closed on Monday for the Columbus Day holiday.

However, cash flow records in the official books show a different trajectory from the excitement on social media timelines.

Six Times the Budget for Preferred Stock

Between Sept. 28 and Oct. 4, Strategy confirmed the purchase of 334 BTC worth $28.7 million. That weekly transaction brought the company’s total Bitcoin holdings to exactly 848,000 BTC.

During the same period, the largest cash outflows went toward internal equity. Strategy spent $176.3 million repurchasing roughly 1.77 million shares of STRC preferred stock. The value of the preferred stock buyback was more than six times the budget spent on buying Bitcoin that week.

Where the Remaining $5.41 Billion Went

The tilt toward preferred stock buybacks aligns with allocation patterns observed throughout the third quarter. Strategy raised $5.41 billion in capital from new common stock issuances, yet added only 1,666 BTC from the start to the end of the quarter.

Analyst Shanaka Anslem Perera broke down the capital allocation details based on SEC filings. Of the total $5.41 billion raised, Perera estimated that only 9.5% was directly allocated to buying Bitcoin. The remainder was channeled into three other buckets: dollar reserves, dividend payments, and repurchases of STRC preferred shares.

Perera noted that this accumulation of liquidity is not a sign that appetite for crypto accumulation has waned. “Raising capital does not mean immediately buying Bitcoin - retained cash can fund purchases down the road,” Perera said.

A Multi-Layered Treasury Beyond Bitcoin

This shift in spending composition highlights an evolving operational model for Strategy. The company now manages a complex treasury strategy featuring common stock, STRC preferred stock, debt, and Bitcoin as core assets. The portfolio is no longer driven by a single instrument, but rather a financial structure that demands the fulfillment of ongoing obligations.

For market participants expecting every dollar of new capital to be immediately funneled into crypto markets, third-quarter dynamics offer a reality check. Saylor may continue dropping orange hints on social media, but Strategy’s capital allocation is now tied to dividend obligations and share management that absorb a substantial portion of real cash.
