Ethereum’s Glamsterdam Test Hits 200 Million Gas Limit on Sepolia - Sees Last-Minute Emergency Fix

Ethereum has just expanded its capacity. The Sepolia testnet activated the Glamsterdam upgrade on October 6, 2026, at 13:53:36 UTC, raising the network’s gas limit from around 60 million to 200 million. This more than threefold capacity increase serves as a technical trial before a similar update reaches the mainnet.

In the Ethereum system, gas functions as the fundamental unit of measurement to determine the amount of computational effort that can fit into a single network block. Larger block capacity accommodates more transactions and complex activities simultaneously. Users gain ample room to trade, send stablecoins, and use applications without competing for limited space that typically triggers fee spikes.

Last-Minute Move with Prysm

The activation of this new limit was accompanied by a last-minute software release. The Prysm team - one of Ethereum’s primary validator clients - rolled out version 7.2.1 right before the scheduled Glamsterdam activation. Node operators who did not update their clients would remain stuck producing blocks at the old 60 million limit, unless they manually modified their settings.

This difference in block sizes could threaten the quality of network testing. If 60 million blocks were mixed into a test designed for a 200 million limit, the resulting data would dilute the trial. This mixture would render the final evaluation conclusions invalid.

Tug-of-War Over Operator Costs

Glamsterdam operates strictly on Sepolia and is not yet active on the Ethereum mainnet. The environment serves as a testing ground for developers to observe how hard the Ethereum engine can be pushed. Ethereum is deliberately raising block capacity in stages to map out the balance between network capacity and decentralization.

Developers need to gauge how far block size can expand before the cost of running a validator node becomes too expensive. The trial phase seeks to identify the maximum ceiling for this expansion, ensuring node operators can sustain the increased operational burden.
