Robinhood Bangun Blockchain buat Saham Tokenisasi, yang Meledak Malah Memecoin Kucing - CEO-nya pun Ikut Terpincut

Robinhood Built a Blockchain for Tokenized Stocks, But a Cat Memecoin Exploded Instead - and Even Its CEO Joined the Craze

Robinhood built its own blockchain for a seemingly serious purpose: facilitating tokenized stocks and real-world assets. But since Robinhood Chain officially went live on July 1, what truly exploded there was something else entirely - speculative memecoin trading, which has become the chain’s primary use case so far.

This irony is not even new. The pattern closely mirrors Coinbase’s launch of Base in 2023, when memecoins and speculation surged first while “serious” applications followed later. And this time, the momentum is wild: Robinhood Chain has already surpassed Base in daily transaction volume, processing 10.4 million transactions versus Base’s 6.4 million - just about 1.5 weeks after overtaking it, according to Token Terminal.

Noble Goals, Meme Reality

Technically, Robinhood Chain is an Ethereum layer-2 built on Arbitrum’s Orbit stack, settling transactions on the Ethereum network and using ETH for gas fees. Its flagship product, Stock Tokens, is an on-chain version of equities like Nvidia and Apple that can be traded 24/7, structured as tokenized debt securities and restricted for US residents. Major protocols such as Uniswap, Chainlink, and Morpho have been integrated since launch.

However, Dune Analytics data paints a starkly different picture. Real-world assets (RWAs), the primary reason the chain was built, account for just 4.1% of total value locked - worth around $13 million. The rest is dominated by asset management (40.5%), lending (38.3%), spot exchanges (11.9%), and perpetual futures (5.2%). Meanwhile, the CASHCAT memecoin triggered an ecosystem of other Robinhood-themed tokens such as Cash Dog in Hood, Little John, Hoodrat, and Arrow - all emerging in the past two weeks, supported by launch platform NOXA.fun and the “basedbot” trading bot.

When the CEO Turns Around

Most entertaining and telling is the boss’s own stance. Robinhood CEO Vlad Tenev told CNBC on July 2 that assets without utility have no long-term purpose, and that tokenized RWAs are the true direction of crypto. Six days later, as the CASHCAT token soared, he posted that his chain “works well for memes too” - and followed the token’s X account. On the stablecoin front, Global Dollar (USDG) from the Paxos consortium co-founded by Robinhood accounts for about $200 million of the chain’s $299 million stablecoin market cap, with the remainder held by Ethena’s USDe.

Unanswered Questions

The core issue is simple yet decisive: can this speculative memecoin frenzy be converted into real adoption for Robinhood’s tokenized stock products, or will meme traders flee to the next chain once momentum fades - following the familiar pattern of new crypto chains? For now, Robinhood is getting the traffic and attention coveted by many projects. Whether it proves to be a solid foundation or merely fireworks, only time will tell.
