Nigel Farage’s Reform UK party has secured £72 million in campaign funds. Delivered within just two days, the major capital injection came from two prominent crypto figures: BitMEX co-founder Ben Delo and early Tether investor Christopher Harborne. The pair split the contribution evenly, each depositing £36 million into the party’s accounts.
The joint sum immediately broke the record for the largest political donation in British history. For comparison, the amount provided by the two crypto executives exceeded the combined total raised by all UK political parties throughout the entire previous year. Because domestic regulations have banned political donations made directly in crypto assets since March, the entire transaction was processed using conventional fiat currency.
Racing Ahead of Proposed Donation Caps
The decision to transfer tens of millions of pounds upfront was driven by tactical considerations. Delo structured his personal contribution to match a £1 million monthly budget running through the 2029 general election. He opted to pay his full commitment upfront to preempt plans by the governing Labour Party, which is weighing strict caps on large-scale political donations.
Delo’s move quickly spurred Harborne to follow suit. The Tether investor decided to match his peer’s donation out of a purely competitive spirit. Addressing potential concerns over conflicts of interest, Harborne emphasized that his funding comes with no strings attached, rejecting expectations of preferential policy treatment or future honors and peerages.
For Reform UK, the £72 million war chest is allocated entirely for election preparations. The party plans to deploy the capital to recruit 400 full-time campaign managers - at a ratio of one manager per targeted parliamentary constituency. The remaining funds will go toward building a dedicated policy formulation team.
Past Controversies Behind the Donors
Despite the financial windfall, the backgrounds of both billionaire donors have drawn public scrutiny. Ben Delo was previously entangled in Anti-Money Laundering (AML) regulatory violations during his tenure managing BitMEX operations. He was cleared of legal liabilities after receiving a presidential pardon from U.S. President Donald Trump in 2025.
Financial ties between Harborne and party leadership have also drawn scrutiny. The UK Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards is currently examining the declaration of a £5 million personal gift previously provided by Harborne directly to Farage.
With the funds already deposited into party accounts, the donation has reshaped Britain’s political financing landscape overnight. Reform UK now holds ample resources to contest hundreds of parliamentary seats, while parliamentary watchdogs remain focused on assessing the boundaries of political cash flows.
