Verus Ethereum Bridge Kebobolan $7,5 Juta - Retasan Kedua Sejak Mei Langsung Lari ke Tornado Cash

Verus Ethereum Bridge Drained for $7.5M - Second Hack Since May Routed to Tornado Cash

Verus Coin’s (@VerusCoin) Ethereum bridge has been compromised once again. Hackers recently exploited the interoperability protocol to drain $7.55 million in assets before routing the stolen funds through crypto mixer Tornado Cash. This is not the first occurrence - the exact same bridge network suffered a breach back in May.

On-chain analytics tracker @lookonchain reported the exploit on X, where their initial alert quickly gained traction with 192 likes and 21 retweets from observers tracking the movement of the stolen funds. According to tracking data, the attackers did not keep the assets in their original form, instead converting the entire loot into 3,916 ETH valued at approximately $7.52 million.

Following the swap, the funds were immediately deposited into Tornado Cash for laundering purposes. The use of the crypto mixing platform adds complexity for both developers and on-chain investigators, as the Ethereum transaction trail is now severed, making asset recovery significantly harder to execute.

A Wave of Cross-Protocol Attacks

The breach of the Verus Coin bridge comes amid a broader wave of crypto hacks. Headline trends from CoinDesk noted that several protocols tied to the Bitcoin and Ethereum ecosystems recently lost up to $35 million in funds. These exploits took place within hours of each other, hitting various system vulnerabilities across the decentralized finance landscape.

Verus itself is built as a blockchain project facilitating a direct bridge to Ethereum for cross-chain interoperability. The protocol was fundamentally designed to allow users to transfer value seamlessly between networks. However, technical vulnerabilities repeatedly leveraged by attackers raise critical questions about the resilience of cross-chain bridges as key Web3 infrastructure.

A Vault Door Breached Twice

The repeated exploitation of the same protocol highlights the fragile security standards of asset bridges in the industry today. In the May exploit, hackers identified a vulnerability and drained liquidity, and similar losses have now recurred on the very same bridge. As of now, the Verus development team has not released confirmation regarding the specific vulnerability exploited or further mitigation plans.

For liquidity providers and regular users utilizing the interoperability protocol, the second incident serves as a stern warning. Locking value in a venue that has not fully patched its vulnerabilities is no longer just a matter of price volatility, but rather leaving money in a vault whose doors have been breached twice in quick succession. Reported by @lookonchain on X.
