Australia Punya ATM Kripto Terbanyak di Asia-Pasifik - Tapi 96 Mesin Baru Saja Dimatikan Paksa Selama 3 Bulan

Australia Has the Most Crypto ATMs in Asia-Pacific - But 96 Machines Have Just Been Forcefully Shut Down for 3 Months

Dozens of Bitcoin ATM machines that usually operate in Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane are now shut down. Starting Sunday, AUSTRAC, as Australia’s anti-money laundering regulator, officially suspended Cryptolink’s registration as a virtual asset service provider. This suspension period will last for three full months. As a direct result of this decision, all 96 crypto ATM units owned by Cryptolink are prohibited from providing any services to users during the active freeze period.

This firm step was taken due to a series of compliance issues. AUSTRAC CEO Brendan Thomas stated that his agency has ongoing concerns regarding Cryptolink’s internal systems. The company is deemed not yet capable of managing high-risk transactions passing through their ATM network.

Cryptolink’s list of violations centers on administrative obligations. The company failed to meet the basic reporting requirements mandated by the state. One of the main issues is the absence of threshold transaction reports. In addition, the regulator noted that Cryptolink also failed to respond to a number of information requests sent by AUSTRAC.

Not the First Warning

This freezing action is actually not a surprise for the company. Back in October 2025, Cryptolink had already entered into a special agreement with ‘enforceable undertaking’ status with AUSTRAC. The agreement was born after the Crypto Task Force discovered a number of operational weaknesses. At that time, the task force’s findings included issues with delayed transaction reporting and a lack of standards in the company’s risk assessment system.

AUSTRAC had even imposed financial penalties before enforcing this operational sanction. The regulator had previously issued a fine of $56,340 to Cryptolink. Although the fine was paid in full, the compliance improvements demanded by the state were apparently not met, leading to the suspension of the license this week.

Focus on Criminal Loopholes

The regulator’s decision comes amid Australia’s status as the country with the largest number of crypto ATMs in the Asia-Pacific region. The dominance of these physical machines offers easy access to the digital asset network for the general public. However, at the same time, the face-to-face-free intersection of cash and crypto also opens up vulnerabilities to money laundering.

Aware of these risks, Australian authorities have taken preventive measures. Since the end of 2024, they have continued to tighten supervision over loopholes for criminal use through crypto ATM networks.

The next three months will be a testing period for Cryptolink to resolve their reporting systems. For other operators, this sanction sends a straight message: ignoring warning letters and basic transaction reports can force physical machines to collect dust on the roadside.
