A volunteer initiative called “Bitcoin Red Team” is burning around $10,000 per day to secure the ecosystem. Led by AnchorWatch CEO Rob Hamilton, the team uses artificial intelligence to scan code and search for weak points. So far, they have examined 150 Bitcoin repositories.
The trend of using AI to uncover crypto vulnerabilities has been growing recently. Previously, the Claude Opus 4.8 model revealed a four-year-old security flaw in the Zcash network. Malicious actors have also used AI to find vulnerabilities in Coldcard. Furthermore, the Boltz protocol bridge was forced to suspend its services because attackers used AI faster than the system repair team.
One Critical Flaw Every Hour
The scanning results of this volunteer team are progressing rapidly. A developer named Calle stated that on average, team members find one critical exploit per hour. Within a 12-hour span, they reported critical vulnerabilities to several projects. The total operational expenditure reached $20,000 to pay for various AI services.
The team deployed a lineup of AI models, ranging from Kimi K3, OpenAI GPT Sol, Anthropic Claude Fable and Opus, to Z.ai GLM 5.2. More than a dozen vulnerabilities have been uncovered by the team so far. To prevent exploitation by hackers, the names of the affected projects are kept secret.
Hamilton said his team also received direct assistance from OpenAI to run a testing program called “Cyber Harness.” He admitted that these scans are expensive but worth it to secure the Bitcoin infrastructure that supports heavy loads within the ecosystem.
Who is the Next Target?
The main mission of the Bitcoin Red Team is to build an open-source AI platform capable of automating code security reviews. Their targets include digital wallets, cryptographic libraries, infrastructure, and various other Bitcoin projects.
To fund this entire expensive daily operation, Hamilton confirmed that funding has been fully secured. The volunteer team emphasized that they do not need public donations to continue operations. Security testing is now shifting from human brain capacity to a race of speed between artificial intelligence engines.
