Tom Lee Pasang Target Ethereum $5.000 Akhir 2026 - Vitalik Justru Cemas AI Melemahkan Kriptografi

Tom Lee Sets $5,000 Ethereum Target for End of 2026 - Vitalik Warns AI Could Weaken Cryptography

Two contrasting developments marked the Ethereum ecosystem on the same day. Wall Street analyst Tom Lee predicted that ETH prices could top $5,000 before the end of 2026, according to a report by WatcherGuru on X. When the prediction circulated on October 12, 2026, ETH was trading between $2,555 and $2,563, meaning Lee’s target calls for a nearly twofold rally from current levels.

However, optimism across spot markets stands in stark contrast to technical discussions unfolding among the network’s core developers.

Vitalik Buterin instead shifted focus to the security foundations of digital assets. The Ethereum founder backed a warning from researcher Justin Drake that advances in artificial intelligence could potentially weaken blockchain cryptography faster than quantum computers.

Why AI Is More Urgent Than Quantum Computing

Drake’s concerns were triggered by OpenAI releasing hundreds of new mathematical findings that humans had not yet solved. Although these discoveries do not directly relate to cryptographic systems, the leap in AI agents’ ability to solve complex mathematics opens new vulnerabilities. Drake believes AI agents could potentially discover flaws in elliptic-curve cryptography as well as lattice-based cryptography, two mathematical pillars underpinning current blockchain wallet and transaction security.

Observing the pace of research, Drake called on the crypto industry to prepare to enter “bunker mode.” Buterin concurred with the risk while urging the community to remain calm. “I don’t recommend anyone rush to move funds to a new wallet today. But we should take the risk to cryptography from AI-accelerated math seriously,” Buterin wrote.

Fear Mongering Allegations and Market Reaction

The warning from Drake and Buterin was not universally embraced across the industry. Several analysts and developers from other crypto projects voiced sharp criticism, dismissing the concerns as “fear mongering.” Critics argued that to date, there is no tangible evidence that AI is anywhere close to cracking modern cryptographic algorithms.

Despite the debate, the market showed strong sensitivity to cryptographic protection issues. The StarkNet token (STRK) surged up to 91% after its team announced plans to transition into a post-quantum L1 blockchain. Interest in this issue is not entirely new, given that Zcash and Tron previously activated post-quantum defenses on their respective testnets.

For ETH holders, these two narratives on October 12, 2026, present competing perspectives. Tom Lee’s $5,000 target offers bullish chart figures, yet Vitalik Buterin’s reminder underscores that asset value ultimately hinges on the resilience of the underlying mathematical code.
