The crypto market lost $120 million in 15 minutes. Long liquidations surged after Bitcoin plunged below $82,000 on October 13, 2026, according to a report by WatcherGuru on X. The selling pressure did not originate from digital asset industry developments, but coincided with a steep downturn on the Seoul stock exchange.
Sidecar Activated on Seoul Exchange
South Korea’s benchmark KOSPI index dropped more than 6% on October 13, 2026. The decline was led by the technology and semiconductor sectors, with Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix recording losses nearing or exceeding 8%. This weakness extended a global market trend after the US Philadelphia Semiconductor Index fell roughly 2.7% during Monday’s session.
Heavy selling forced the Korea Exchange to deploy market controls. The exchange operator triggered a sell-side sidecar at around 9:48 AM local time after KOSPI 200 futures contracts tumbled more than 5%, the threshold for exchange curbs. KOSPI program trading was suspended for five minutes to slow the pace of the decline.
How Stock Margin Calls Spill Over into Crypto
Tom Lee of Fundstrat warned on X that South Korea’s stock market plunge could spill over into crypto assets through forced brokerage margin liquidations. When equity portfolio values take a severe hit, investors face margin calls requiring them to immediately post additional collateral or liquidate other liquid assets to cover capital shortfalls.
Investor debt levels in South Korea further exacerbate the risk of contagion. Total investor debt in the country surpassed 60 trillion won in May 2026, with margin loan balances reaching 38.63 trillion won in June. Lee highlighted Ethereum as particularly vulnerable due to high South Korean retail participation in the digital asset market. Even so, Lee viewed the impact on Ethereum as short-term pain, without offering specific price targets or estimated liquidation amounts.
Defense Line at $2,500
Amid external selling pressure, Ethereum’s price action is attempting to find its footing. Analyst Iko observed that Ethereum is still defending the $2,500 level following the market downturn. The $2,550 zone is now the next watch level to assess whether buyers can withstand liquidation spillovers from regional panic.
Institutional buying in Ethereum has also begun to cool. BitMine Immersion Technologies recently acquired 12,532 ETH, bringing its treasury to 6,028,946 ETH, or roughly 4.9% of the 122.1 million ETH supply. Management stated that it has nearly finished purchasing ETH, signaling the end of massive accumulation that regularly absorbed market supply.
For crypto investors, this sudden correlation highlights that liquidity risks do not always stem from on-chain protocol failures. When equity markets tumble and brokers demand margin deposits, digital assets are often the first instruments sold to cover losses on traditional exchanges.
