Uni Eropa Beri Status Khusus ke USDC $73 Miliar - Sementara Euro Digital Tertahan Sampai 2029

EU Grants Special Status to $73 Billion USDC - While Digital Euro Stalled Until 2029

The European Banking Authority has officially brought the world’s second-largest stablecoin under its direct supervision. On Wednesday, October 14, 2026, the European Banking Authority (EBA) classified Circle’s USDC as a significant e-money token under the Markets in Crypto Assets (MiCA) regulatory framework. This move solidifies USDC’s position as it commands a $73 billion market capitalization, sitting right behind Tether (USDT), which leads the market at $184 billion.

However, this significant status is more than just paper classification - the new rules impose a layer of strict oversight that directly binds Circle.

Two Regulators for One Coin

Through the significant e-money classification, the EBA now oversees USDC alongside France’s banking prudential regulator, the Autorite de Controle Prudentiel et de Resolution (ACPR). Both agencies hold a joint mandate over Circle’s reserve operations and governance within the European Union.

So far, regulators have granted the significant classification to 45 select projects across the European Union. The EBA’s move addresses strong demand from European-based token issuers who require regulatory clarity for US dollar-pegged stablecoins.

Why European Corporations Need Dollars

Industry players welcomed the regulatory move as European markets require dollar liquidity for daily transactional activities. Stable Mint CEO James Bennett stated that European markets cannot ignore the need for dollar stablecoins, even though regulators can still tighten safeguards and rules for issuers.

AllUnity CEO Alexander Hoptner emphasized that for European corporations making cross-border payments globally, the availability of euro stablecoins alone is insufficient. International transactions require liquid instruments that are widely accepted by foreign trading partners - a role held to this day by dollar-pegged assets.

Digital Euro Not Arriving Until 2029

The EBA’s move to formalize oversight of private dollar stablecoins comes as the European Central Bank (ECB) continues its digital euro exploration. The central bank’s official digital currency is only expected to potentially launch in 2029 after completing regulatory trials.

For corporations and crypto users in Europe, this situation highlights the reality of transactions today: global business cannot wait until 2029. As long as the digital euro remains an exploratory trial, compliant private dollar stablecoins remain the most realistic instrument on their treasury desks.
