International law firm Greenberg Traurig has confirmed unauthorized access to a number of its documents. According to a Reuters report on September 10, 2026, the confidential documents are now circulating on the dark web. So far, Greenberg has not detailed the specific types of compromised data or the number of clients directly affected by the security breach.
The incident at Greenberg Traurig is just one in a string of consecutive breaches hitting legal professionals throughout 2026. In March, Taft Stettinius & Hollister reported a leak of client Social Security numbers (SSNs). Two months later, Herbert Smith Freehills Kramer suffered an incident with an even wider scope of exposure, leaving SSNs, government-issued IDs, and client medical records publicly exposed.
The list of targets continues to grow. WilmerHale faced a class-action lawsuit in July following a breach of its systems in May. On August 7, Goodwin Procter was targeted, while Quinn Emanuel reported a compromise of an internal account due to social engineering tactics.
Phishing and Third-Party Vulnerabilities
BakerHostetler’s 2026 security report recorded nearly 60 cyber incidents specifically targeting law firms throughout 2025 - a figure that nearly doubled compared to 2024. Of the 1,250 cross-industry data security incidents analyzed, phishing tactics were the leading cause in 30% of cases, followed by third-party vendor vulnerabilities at 25%.
Data protection lapses are increasingly contested in court. Breach incidents triggering client class-action lawsuits reached 14% of all publicly disclosed incidents in 2025, up from 9% the previous year.
High-Value Targets
Client data held by law firms - including records belonging to crypto asset holders - is highly sought after by hackers as fuel for social engineering and follow-up extortion. The Coinbase breach in May 2025 demonstrated the immense value of user data: personal information belonging to 69,461 customers was exposed after attackers bribed an overseas customer support agent.
The compromised data, which included names, addresses, phone numbers, and photos of government-issued IDs, prompted Coinbase to take a firm stance. The exchange refused to pay a $20 million ransom demanded by the hackers, pivoting instead to offer the same amount as a bounty for information leading to the perpetrators’ identities.
