Jordan Fish, known as ‘Cobie’, now holds full control over the Base App alongside Coinbase’s advanced trading product line and flagship application. The new appointment comes after Jesse Pollak stepped down to focus his efforts on developing the Base network infrastructure itself. The product executive, whose fundraising platform Echo was acquired by Coinbase for $375 million in October 2025, began his tenure with a sharp admission: the company had long operated from an ‘ivory tower’ and remained too detached from native crypto users.
Cobie did not hide the fact that Coinbase and Base lost significant support due to a string of preventable missteps. This concern aligns with the view of crypto commentator ‘Rune’, who questioned Base App’s plans to attract new onchain audiences when early supporters felt the ecosystem had repeatedly broken their trust.
Core Network Troubles
Open criticism of Base’s development direction is not new at the management level. Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong previously admitted that their layer-2 network made a mistake by pushing ‘content coins’ initiatives. Following that evaluation, Base overhauled its strategy and shifted its core focus to trading, payment systems, and AI-powered product integrations.
Base’s challenges extend beyond product pivots to its technical foundation. In June 2026, the network suffered a complete outage and halted block production for nearly two hours. The incident was triggered by an invalid block that disrupted the consensus mechanism among validators. Pollak labeled this technical failure as unacceptable.
New Ammunition Against Competitors
Amid this product leadership transition, Base activated a new token standard called B20. The network upgrade allows developers to issue stablecoins and tokenized assets with built-in issuer controls. This infrastructure rollout arrives just as competition across the layer-2 ecosystem intensifies.
The biggest threat recently emerged with the launch of Robinhood Chain on July 1. The Ethereum layer-2 network, affiliated with the popular trading app, competes in the exact arena for users that Base has been targeting.
Facing legacy missteps and fresh competition, Cobie plans to directly engage with and listen to onchain users. He pledged to repair the frayed relationship between the product development team and the community. His primary challenge now is ensuring Coinbase truly steps out of its ivory tower before users migrate permanently to other networks.
