The MANTRA Chain mainnet resumed block production on August 22, 2026, at 05:30 UTC, following the implementation of software update version 8.4.0. The Layer 1 network, which focuses on real-world asset tokenization, was previously offline for approximately 30 hours due to a security vulnerability exploit in the Cosmos-EVM module.
The incident was traced back to the evening of August 20. Upon detecting the exploited vulnerability, the team made a drastic decision: they halted validator operations, disabled public endpoints, and froze staking functions, token transfers, and cross-chain bridge operations. This comprehensive freeze was implemented to prevent hackers from draining more funds from the mainnet system.
Only Targeting Team Wallets
Developers quickly addressed concerns regarding the loss of user funds. The MANTRA team confirmed that the exploit only affected two wallets managed entirely by their internal team. By the time the network was restarted, there were no signs that funds belonging to retail users or business partners had been compromised.
The team also emphasized that all user balances remain intact without changes. The network recovery and resumption of block production were achieved solely through patch implementation, without any rollbacks or reversals of past transaction history. Before pushing the fix to the mainnet, the development team first tested the version 8.4.0 patch in the DuKong testnet environment. Once the fix was verified to run smoothly, it was rolled out simultaneously to all validator nodes.
Shadows of Past Critical Vulnerabilities
The attack on the Cosmos-EVM infrastructure recalls similar incidents that previously affected other projects within the same ecosystem. Five months ago, in March 2026, Cosmos Labs released a critical security advisory under code ASA-2026-002. The vulnerability, which stemmed from the handling of the ICS20 precompile state, had previously compromised the Saga EVM network, resulting in a $7 million loss.
There is still no confirmation or official word from the developers on whether the MANTRA hacker exploited the same security loophole as the Saga EVM breach, or a newly undetected vulnerability.
Market Reaction Reverses
The 30-hour blockchain outage immediately triggered selling pressure. The MANTRA token price plummeted 18.5%, dropping to a new low of $0.004126 during the initial phase of the market reaction. However, the bearish sentiment was short-lived. The price began to climb and gradually recovered once the update was successfully deployed and the network went back online.
