Virtu Financial, M1X Global, and Tradeweb have completed the first on-chain repo transaction utilizing digital sovereign bonds as collateral. This milestone marks the first execution combining government-backed collateral issued natively on a blockchain with a fully atomic settlement system. The entire repo lifecycle through the repurchase phase was completed on the Canton Network in under 10 minutes.
The collateral asset for the transaction was USDM1, a US dollar-denominated sovereign bond instrument issued on the blockchain by the Republic of the Marshall Islands. It is fully backed 1:1 by short-term US Treasury bills. Notably, the USDM1 bond is designed to continue paying coupons to its holder even while pledged as collateral. Under New York legal frameworks, the asset holds official status as a fully secured sovereign obligation.
Institutional Infrastructure Behind the Scenes
Settlement execution leveraged Tradeweb’s platform and exclusively involved fully regulated counterparties. To ensure institutional-grade asset security, custody of USDM1 is handled by three established industry entities: Anchorage Digital, BitGo, and tZERO. The transaction moved across the Canton Network, a blockchain engineered for high-level institutional finance and equipped with privacy features for permissioned transactions.
Institutional capital inflows into Canton have been steadily accelerating. In July, Tradeweb facilitated a real-time transfer of tokenized US Treasuries from investment manager Franklin Templeton to Virtu Financial on the Canton Network, settled against USDCx tokens. The network’s liquidity expansion continued in August when FalconX and Interstice launched a cross-chain swap engine connecting Canton to major ecosystems like Ethereum, Solana, and Robinhood Chain.
More Than Just a Crypto Market Experiment
The volume moving through Canton has also attracted players beyond traditional banking. Trump family-backed crypto project World Liberty Financial launched its USD1 stablecoin on the network. Adoption of the specialized blockchain is even expanding into public sector initiatives slated for the coming years.
Infrastructure firm Digital Asset and the American Idea Foundation - an organization founded by former US House Speaker Paul Ryan - have outlined plans for a 2027 operational pilot. They intend to utilize the Canton Network to distribute state-level welfare benefits across three US jurisdictions.
The fact that traditionally rigid repo transactions, which often take days to settle, can now finish in under 10 minutes sends a clear message: legacy financial systems now have an efficient parallel rail, bridging the gap between sovereign debt markets and the settlement speed of blockchain technology.
