Solana Targets 150-Millisecond Finality Starting October 21 - Transactions to Pause Briefly During Migration

Solana has scheduled the activation of the Alpenglow consensus upgrade for October 21, 2026, at epoch 1064. The rollout is targeted for approximately 13:20 UTC, shifting from an earlier estimate of 14:50 UTC. The Solana Foundation noted that the mainnet upgrade will not take effect until that epoch boundary is reached.

The update centers on slashing transaction settlement times. Currently, applications on the Solana network display initial confirmations within 2 to 3 seconds through an optimistic scheme, but full finality under the TowerBFT system takes roughly 13 seconds. Under Alpenglow, the target finality is set at around 150 milliseconds in normal conditions, though this figure is not an absolute guarantee for every transaction.

This consensus shift introduces a new voting process, even though one of its supporting components will not launch alongside it.

Two Voting Paths Under Votor Control

Alpenglow replaces TowerBFT with the Votor module to manage voting logic and transaction finality. The Votor system operates under two validator participation scenarios. The first path achieves finality in a single round if at least 80% of validators participate. If the participation rate stands at 60%, the system switches to a second round to lock in consensus.

However, this upgrade package does not include the entire initial design. A data distribution component named Rotor has been postponed to a subsequent release and will be absent on October 21. Before arriving on mainnet, Alpenglow was tested on devnet on September 26, a day after entering testnet. The Alpenglow codebase itself had been embedded in Agave 4.2 for testing since August 14, having previously been tied to the Agave 4.3 release on Solana’s roadmap.

Validator Requirements and Potential Network Pause

Migration readiness now rests on validator operators. They are required to run Agave software version 4.3.2, Jito-Solana, or Harmonic Salsa before epoch 1064 begins. Alternative clients such as Firedancer and Frankendancer are not supported during the migration phase. In addition, operators must maintain a minimum balance of 0.8 SOL above the rent-exempt reserve on their vote accounts to secure validator admission tickets.

The consensus transition also carries the potential for brief technical disruptions. New transactions will pause from entering blocks for several seconds or potentially longer, accompanied by the possible appearance of “node unhealthy” errors. Infrastructure provider Quicknode warned that Yellowstone data streams could experience a one-time disconnect, and earliest-processed data subscriptions may display slots that are never confirmed.

User Terms and Application Data Handling

For asset holders and retail users, the consensus upgrade does not alter daily transaction routines. Transaction execution, on-chain program workflows, and base fee mechanisms will continue to operate without modification, meaning everyday users do not need to take any action.

Technical adjustments are directed primarily at application developers. Quicknode recommends using confirmed or finalized commitment levels when handling critical data that cannot be reverted. For the Solana ecosystem, validator compliance in meeting migration requirements on October 21 will be the key factor ensuring a smooth transition toward the 150-millisecond finality target.
