Sberbank Rusia Siap Terima Agunan Pinjaman Ethereum dan USDT - Asal Lolos Izin Bank Sentral

Russia’s Sberbank Ready to Accept Ethereum and USDT as Loan Collateral Pending Central Bank Approval

Sberbank plans to accept Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Tether USDT as loan collateral. Sberbank Deputy Chairman Anatoly Popov disclosed the banking institution’s plans to the TASS news agency on August 28, 2026.

“We plan to accept not only Bitcoin but also Ethereum and the Tether stablecoin as collateral,” Popov said. Sberbank drew on experience from a Bitcoin-backed loan pilot project with Intelion Data, a Russian mining company. In that trial, the borrower used crypto assets generated from their own mining operations as collateral to the bank.

The expansion of collateral to Ethereum and USDT will not take effect automatically. The rollout for both crypto assets can only proceed after the Central Bank of Russia grants public circulation approval. The Central Bank is still tasked with assessing which digital assets meet circulation standards, with foreign stablecoin entities, likely including USDT, expected to face the same requirements as other crypto assets.

Russia’s Crypto Market Framework Takes Effect September 1

Sberbank’s acceptance of crypto collateral comes alongside the implementation of Russia’s comprehensive regulatory framework starting September 1, 2026. The state regulations create a new regulated market involving banks, brokers, asset managers, crypto exchanges, and digital depositories. Market participants have until July 1, 2027, to obtain all necessary operating licenses from the government.

Non-qualified investors must pass a knowledge test before they can purchase digital assets, with a maximum cap of 300,000 rubles per year through each intermediary. In contrast, qualified investors face no monetary spending limits whatsoever.

To complement the newly regulated market ecosystem, Sberbank is developing digital depository infrastructure. The platform for recording asset ownership, managing wallet systems, and settling crypto transactions is scheduled to launch on December 1, 2026.

Domestic Payments for Goods Remain Illegal

Even as banks open their doors to crypto, the Russian government maintains a strict ban on using digital assets for domestic payments. Citizens are prohibited from exchanging crypto assets to purchase goods and services domestically. The legal framework of the new transaction system applies solely to cross-border settlement purposes.

As of publication, Sberbank has not announced an exact launch date for the loan program. Details regarding eligibility criteria and the specific targeted client segments have also not been established. However, for crypto holders in Russia, official bank collateral facilities could offer added practical utility for their assets, provided the tokens clear regulatory approval from the Central Bank.
