Avon and Somerset Police in the UK have seized 20.21 BTC along with other crypto assets and bank funds worth a total of $1.4 million, or ยฃ1,032,487. The recovered assets were traced back to fund flows across darknet marketplaces actively operating between 2016 and 2019.
The wallet owner investigated by authorities had a prior criminal record for money laundering. However, the male suspect died before law enforcement could complete the legal asset forfeiture process.
The recovery of digital assets from the deceased suspect was facilitated by new powers introduced in April 2024. UK legislation now allows police to freeze and seize crypto assets without having to arrest a suspect first. The recovery of the 20.21 BTC marks the largest crypto seizure for Avon and Somerset Police since the regulations came into full effect.
Forensic Trails Uncover the Past
The police department’s internal cyber team traced the movement of the seized assets by analyzing transaction flows on the blockchain. Records on the public ledger led investigators directly to prominent names from the defunct darknet era.
AlphaBay, the largest marketplace at the time, was raided and seized by law enforcement in July 2017. On the very same day, Dutch police took over Hansa and shut it down permanently. These consecutive operations curtailed illicit activities before platforms like Dream Market also shut down in April 2019.
The resolution of this cold case demonstrates that blockchain forensics can dissect transactions dating back nearly a decade. The valuation of the secured Bitcoin stash has also surged past $1.6 million, exceeding the police’s initial valuation at the time of seizure.
The Ledger Turns the Tide
Detective Constable Anthony Davis emphasized blockchain technology’s role as a valuable source of evidence for police due to its permanent transaction ledger.
Under provisions of the Proceeds of Crime Act, funds seized from the criminal underworld are repurposed to support local community initiatives as well as finance local police operations.
Assets originating from illicit historical transactions are now aiding community safety operations, ensuring that the criminal trail is not lost even after the perpetrator has passed away.
