Bitcoin Hits $81,000, Liquidating $225M in Shorts in 10 Minutes - Saylor’s Portfolio Reverses Fortune

Bitcoin broke through the $81,000 mark on August 25, 2026, posting gains of over 20% in the past week alone. The price surge immediately triggered a cascade of liquidations across derivatives markets, wiping out $225 million in short positions within just 10 minutes as Bitcoin tapped its peak.

Surging Inflows Flood Spot ETF Markets

The price rally coincided with aggressive institutional accumulation. According to trading data on Monday, U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs attracted $337.6 million in net inflows, extending their positive streak to six consecutive days for a cumulative total of $2.26 billion. Last week’s performance also marked the strongest weekly inflow record since October 2025, buoyed by a $1.92 billion capital injection.

These inflows pushed institutional holdings to new heights. Cumulative inflows since the debut of spot Bitcoin ETFs have now reached $54 billion, bringing total net assets across all Bitcoin ETF products to around $98.56 billion. The fresh influx of capital has also trimmed year-to-date net outflows down to just $2.57 billion.

The bullish momentum extended beyond Bitcoin, as all crypto spot ETF products saw positive flows on August 24. Spot Ethereum ETFs recorded $115.57 million in inflows, while Solana ETF products pulled in $33.49 million. At the same time, XRP ETFs registered $13.82 million in additions. In response to the influx of positive data, market sentiment shifted significantly. The Crypto Fear & Greed Index climbed to 74, signaling “Greed” - its highest level of optimism since October 2025.

A Dramatic Reversal for Saylor’s Portfolio

Bitcoin’s move above $80,000 completely transformed the balance sheets of major institutional players. The crypto portfolio of Michael Saylor’s Strategy now holds an unrealized profit of $4.7 billion. According to on-chain analytics platform Lookonchain, this marks a sharp turnaround from just last week, when the firm was sitting on an unrealized loss of $9.5 billion.

For traders betting on a correction, the sudden spike to $81,000 acted as a classic market trap. The destruction of a quarter-billion dollars in futures positions within 10 minutes underscores how quickly the market can punish opposing bets. As long as institutional capital continues to flow through ETFs and absorb spot selling pressure, short sellers will likely remain the first to bear the brunt of the losses.
