Coinbase Buka Derivatif Kripto di Kanada Saat Kepemilikan Sentuh 25% - Tapi Khusus Pemodal $5 Juta

Coinbase Launches Crypto Derivatives in Canada as Ownership Hits 25% - But Only for $5M Investors

Canadian investors have gained direct access to new crypto derivative instruments in the country. Coinbase has officially launched fully licensed derivatives trading services for eligible residents. The US-based platform is offering 23 perpetual and dated futures options, five commodity futures contracts, and the specialized Coinbase 50 Index instrument.

Coinbase claims this latest move positions the company as the first major crypto-native platform to offer direct futures order execution in Canada. Qualified clients can now open nano-sized positions with up to 10x leverage. Supported assets include BTC, ETH, SOL, and other leading options.

Coinbase’s derivatives service operates in compliance with foreign entity exemption rules. Its subsidiary, Coinbase Financial Markets, holds registered Futures Commission Merchant status with the US Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC). This regulatory status in its home country serves as the foundation enabling Coinbase to offer cross-border transactions.

This advanced derivatives service is closed to retail investors. Trading is restricted exclusively to two client groups: Canadian residents who can verify a minimum of $5 million in net financial assets, and registered investment advisers or licensed dealers authorized by Canadian regulatory authorities.

Major Players Enter Amid Surging Adoption

The arrival of institutional margin instruments coincides with a sharp increase in local crypto adoption. Canada’s crypto ownership rate rose to 25% this year, up from 10% recorded in the Ontario Securities Commission’s 2023 data. This surging market interest has attracted several competing cross-border platforms.

Investment platform Webull recently expanded its licensed crypto trading services to target Canadian residents. Webull’s client-facing trading ecosystem relies on Coinbase’s infrastructure to facilitate order execution and custody protection for client funds.

Trading app Robinhood also took a fast-track route via acquisition in June to capture market share in Canada. Management completed the $180 million takeover of local crypto firm WonderFi. The acquisition granted direct control over Bitbuy and Coinsquare, along with the transfer of 300,000 active funded crypto accounts.

Institutional Access Expands as Retail Faces Restrictions

The approval of foreign institutional facilities contrasts sharply with legislative moves surrounding everyday retail users. While Coinbase is permitted to offer 10x leverage to $5 million investors, retail market activity has faced phased regulatory tightening.

Signs of regulatory restrictions emerged in April when lawmakers proposed a ban on the deployment and use of crypto ATMs. Officials argued that shutting down physical kiosks would reduce cash fraud and money laundering. In parliament, advisory bodies are also advancing plans to ban crypto donations and operational contributions to domestic political parties.

Coinbase’s regulated derivatives expansion creates new avenues for accredited individuals with at least $5 million seeking exposure in a market where crypto ownership has reached 25%. However, similar streamlined access remains heavily restricted by law for the broader population.
