The flight of Edward Zimbardi following an initial indictment in July has finally come to an end. Zimbardi was arrested by authorities in Fiji and immediately deported back to the United States to face legal proceedings. Upon his arrival, the District Court for the Northern District of Georgia officially unsealed indictment documents accusing him of being the mastermind behind a $165 million crypto Ponzi scheme, equivalent to approximately Rp2.5 trillion.
The case centers on an investment platform named ‘Crypto Program’. The platform is known to have operated by targeting thousands of investors between 2022 and 2023. The modus operandi involved promising large, fictitious returns to lure fresh funds from victims into the system.
Long List of Money Laundering Charges
As a result of his actions, Zimbardi now faces a mountain of charges in court. The defendant is charged with a total of 24 overlapping financial crime counts. The breakdown includes 12 counts of wire fraud, one count of conspiracy to commit money laundering, and 11 counts of transactional money laundering.
In addition to bringing the defendant to court, U.S. Prosecutors have also taken further steps to secure the flow of funds generated from these crimes. They have filed a forfeiture application for assets related to Zimbardi’s crimes totaling $6 million. Interestingly, these million-dollar assets had already been secured by authorities in the Netherlands in 2024, demonstrating a trail of hidden funds scattered across continents.
Seized Portfolio Packed with Meme Tokens
The list of seized assets from the Netherlands details where the funds from ‘Crypto Program’ investors were channeled. The frozen crypto portfolio contains not only major assets like Bitcoin, but also fractions of various other digital assets. The seized assets include 11.87 BTC, 2.15 ETH, 47,110 USDT, and 3.3 million XRP.
The rest of the seized assets are dominated by a lineup of meme tokens and altcoins totaling hundreds of millions of units. Authorities noted holdings of 713.3 million SHIB, followed by 1,095 DOGE, 10.2 million OSAK, and 11.97 POL. The seizure of this list of assets is an important step to salvage the remaining funds before the main trial begins.
The arrest in Fiji and the seizure of assets in the Netherlands close off any escape options for the platform’s founder. The victims’ money is slowly being mapped out; freedom, it seems, is no longer on the perpetrator’s side.
