Solana to Triple Transaction Capacity on Sept. 9 Ahead of Alpenglow Consensus

Solana Foundation Vice President of Technology Jacob Creech released the schedule for a series of network upgrades on August 30, 2026. The upcoming upgrade is the launch of Transaction V1, scheduled to go live on September 9, 2026.

The implementation of Transaction V1 increases the transaction size limit from 1,232 bytes to 4,096 bytes - a 3.3-fold capacity jump. The expanded payload space allows developers to execute zero-knowledge proof operations, process complex multisignature instructions, adopt BLS signatures, and execute cross-chain operations in a single transaction.

Application-Level Adjustments

Developers must opt in to switch to Transaction V1, as the network will continue validating older transaction formats such as legacy and v0. To offset the increased capacity, the Transaction V1 format removes the address lookup tables feature.

These technical conditions require applications to design systems that select transaction formats based on their daily needs. Wallet providers, API services, and other infrastructure layers are also required to update their respective operational systems to handle the larger data payloads.

Rent and Slot Time Reductions

Solana is targeting a reduction in on-chain storage costs, known as rent. The first phase of reductions began rolling out the week of August 31. The network aims for an overall fee reduction of up to 90%, slashing the rate from 6,960 lamports/byte down to 696 lamports/byte across five execution phases.

Block production speed is also being optimized. The network has already reduced target slot times from 400 milliseconds down to 350 milliseconds. The upgrade roadmap targets further slot time reductions to 300, 250, and eventually 200 milliseconds.

Culminating in October’s Alpenglow

The entire sequence of upgrades leads to a consensus redesign dubbed Alpenglow. Solana has scheduled the rollout of Alpenglow in October via the Agave 4.3 client update, aiming to push network finality down to 150 milliseconds.

Each upgrade component relies on a separate activation path. Enabling Transaction V1 will not automatically trigger Alpenglow or shorter slot times. Reported by crypto.news.
