Two Binance employees were finally released on August 20, 2026. The two were freed by United Arab Emirates authorities after being stopped and detained at the airport in recent weeks. According to confirmation from the crypto exchange, the two staff members were required to answer a series of questions regarding the movement of third-party funds passing through client accounts on their platform.
News of the detention did not come from local police announcements. The New York Times was the first to report the interception incident, citing four different sources. Binance subsequently released a follow-up statement to Reuters, confirming that its employees indeed provided statements to officials. The company rejected the use of the word “investigation” and preferred to describe the process as merely a routine request for information.
Not the Primary Police Target
In this case, management emphasized that their staff members are not the primary legal subjects. The police investigation is entirely centered on specific fund flows belonging to a third party. To date, the type of transaction, the identity of the entity controlling the funds, and the recipient of the money have not been disclosed to the public.
Binance clearly stated that no formal charges have been brought against their staff. Nevertheless, the claim that both employees are currently completely cleared rests solely on the statement from the company. No police announcement or court records have yet confirmed this release status.
The exchange also quickly dismissed any similarities between this case and the detention that occurred in Nigeria in early 2024. At the time, Binance executive Tigran Gambaryan was detained and faced criminal charges in court before the case was withdrawn.
Dubai License Status Safe
The airport incident is confirmed not to disrupt Binance’s daily operations in the Middle East region. The status of their operating license in Dubai remains unchanged. The Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority (VARA) still lists the Binance FZE entity on the register of licensed providers actively serving clients.
This Dubai VASP license is a milestone they recently secured in April 2024. The operating permit gives them the green light to run various exchange functions. Its scope includes crypto asset exchange, broker operations, lending, and investment management for retail, qualified, and institutional investors.
Binance ensures it continues to cooperate with the Dubai Police and other emirate legal authorities. They are co-developing more transparent procedures to handle similar incidents. The exchange believes that the flow of crypto transactions and the setup of institutional client fund accounts still feel foreign to some officials. Extensive discussions with UAE officials are expected to result in clearer coordination procedures to protect their field staff in the future.
