The Avalanche (AVAX) network is testing a major update called Helicon on the Fuji testnet. This upgrade brings one key change: slashing the minimum validator commitment for the mainnet from 14 days to just 48 hours. Reducing the time requirement from 336 hours to two days is a move by Avalanche to attract more institutional validators into their ecosystem.
For institutions, time is risk. By lowering the asset lock-up duration, Avalanche is attempting to remove the obstacles that make large players hesitant to deploy capital. A 48-hour commitment period gives validators much more flexibility compared to holding assets for a full two weeks.
Managing Cycles and Compounding Yields
To complement the shortened timeframe, Helicon also introduces an auto-staking renewal feature. This update is designed so that short-duration lock-ups do not turn into an administrative burden recurring every two days. Through this new feature, validators can configure their own staking cycle periods and determine the auto-compounding ratio of their yields.
This means yields earned every 48 hours can be automatically added back to the initial capital for the next cycle. However, Avalanche has set strict boundaries. This auto-renewal feature is designed specifically for mainnet validators and does not apply to those serving as Avalanche L1 or legacy subnet validators.
How Institutional Capital Reacts
Responses from institutional circles echo the goals of this update. The management of AVAX treasury firm AVAX One stated that the shorter time commitment requirement is expected to boost staking liquidity. They view the reduced duration as a way for institutions to maintain asset availability while continuing to participate in securing the network.
AVAX One’s position provides a clear picture of the scale of institutional capital involved in Avalanche. As of mid-August 2026, the AVAX One treasury reportedly held a total of 14,091,424 AVAX. Out of that amount, about 95% has been delegated for staking, yielding them an annual return of 5.4%.
This step by Avalanche shifts the traditional perspective on network security. Instead of forcing validators to lock up assets for weeks, the network now prefers to offer short duration options and seamless capital rotation without human intervention.
