BIS Sebut Stablecoin Mulai Gerus Deposito Bank - Kenaikan Bunga 0,01 Poin Terbukti Mampu Meredamnya

BIS Says Stablecoins Are Starting to Erode Bank Deposits - A 0.01-Point Rate Hike Proves Enough to Curb Them

The Bank for International Settlements (BIS) has officially reached a new conclusion: stablecoins are now directly competing with conventional banks for customer deposits. The umbrella organization for the world’s central banks emphasized that digital dollar assets are no longer merely speculative instruments for crypto trading, but liquidity pools that are beginning to erode banks’ deposit base.

For regulators, this finding reinforces longstanding concerns over the threat of banking disintermediation. Amid a global stablecoin market that reached $6 trillion, the shift of funds from checking or savings accounts to digital wallets risks reducing the availability of low-cost deposits that have long sustained bank lending. However, the findings also reveal another side: banking defenses hinge on remarkably small shifts.

How a 0.01-Point Rate Hike Can Curb Growth

A deposit rate hike as small as 0.01 percentage points is already enough to curb the pace of stablecoin growth. BIS research findings show that capital holders react swiftly to yield differentials between the conventional financial system and on-chain instruments.

USDC emerged as the asset most vulnerable to banking interest rate adjustments. When deposit yields at commercial banks rise even marginally, interest in holding liquidity in USDC stalls immediately, demonstrating that inflows into the dollar-pegged asset are sensitive to real-world risk-free rates.

Two Opposing Directions in the Banking Industry

Wells Fargo, Goldman Sachs, and Morgan Stanley are now actively exploring tokenization and blockchain-based payment systems. The three Wall Street banks view distributed ledger technology as a new avenue of efficiency for processing inter-institutional transactions.

This situation has triggered tension across the financial industry. On one hand, banks want to adopt the speed of blockchain transfers; on the other hand, they face the risk of losing low-cost deposits if retail and corporate clients choose to keep daily cash in stablecoins.

New Justification for Tightening Reserve Rules

The BIS’s status as the central bank of central banks gives substantial regulatory weight to this research. Its official findings often serve as a primary reference for monetary authorities globally when designing central bank digital currencies (CBDCs) or constraining private issuers.

Financial authorities now hold solid ground to rein in yield-bearing products in the crypto sector. If stablecoins are shown to erode bank deposits, regulators could set caps on stablecoin yields or require 1:1 reserve placement directly with conventional banks to prevent liquidity from flowing out of the banking system.

For investors and digital dollar holders, this policy direction sends a clear signal: high yields from dollar-pegged assets are likely to face tighter restrictions. When central banks begin to view crypto as a threat to bank deposits, protecting legacy banking systems will consistently take precedence over on-chain liquidity freedom.
