Standard Chartered launched Bitcoin and Ether spot trading services for institutional clients in the United Arab Emirates through its Dubai International Financial Centre branch as of September 3, 2026. This move positions it as the first Global Systemically Important Bank and currently the only global bank offering institutional digital asset spot trading in the region.
Corporations, asset managers, and professional investors can now trade the two largest cryptocurrencies through the exact same electronic channels used for the bank’s conventional foreign exchange transactions. The settlement process does not lock clients into a closed ecosystem. Clients are free to appoint their own third-party custodian of choice to hold trading proceeds without any obligation to use Standard Chartered’s vault.
Combining Trading and Custody Services
The newly launched spot trading feature stems from the combination of trading and custody capabilities built separately in the United Arab Emirates since 2024. The bank previously secured a digital asset custody license from the Dubai Financial Services Authority in September 2024, subsequently onboarding Brevan Howard Digital as its inaugural client for custody services.
The Dubai International Financial Centre branch established a collateral mirroring partnership with crypto exchange OKX in April 2025. Through this route, client assets held in Standard Chartered’s vaults are recognized as margin collateral on the OKX platform without transferring coins out of the bank. A year later in April 2026, the collateral ecosystem expanded to include BUIDL, BlackRock’s tokenized US government bond fund.
Continuing the European Blueprint
The launch of crypto services in Dubai replicates a strategy previously rolled out across Europe. Standard Chartered opened a similar facility in its UK branch in July 2025, becoming the first Global Systemically Important Bank to provide deliverable institutional Bitcoin and Ether spot trading. Its operational footprint expanded into the Asian market when the bank positioned itself as the initial distributor for the HKDAP stablecoin in Hong Kong in August 2026.
“Expanding Bitcoin and Ether spot trading capabilities to institutional clients is an important step in broadening our regulated digital asset proposition,” said Standard Chartered UAE CEO Rola Abu Manneh. The convergence of crypto and foreign exchange channels under a major banking umbrella signals the further fading of the barrier between digital asset classes and the traditional financial system.
